Bishops Castle
We were contacted in March 2019 by a representative of the entertainments council of Bishops Castle in Shropshire, who were looking to utilise the availability of EU arts funding to upgrade their stage system for use at the annual Michaelmas Fair.
With a maximum budget of £20,000, and specific requirements which included the steep 1-in-6 gradient the stage and roof would be used on, there were several design revisions made to keep things within budget while providing a safe and durable performance system.
The Michaelmas Fair was set up in 1995 to replace the relocated Steam Fair. Run by volunteers, it has become a hugely popular part of the calendar for locals and visitors to the area.
What was involved?
Working closely with the entertainments organiser, we looked at several designs to suit the available space at the top of the steeply sloped high street. It was decided for total ease of operation that the roof canopy would be mounted to hoist corners that allow for the roof to be constructed at low level before being raised.
The roof structure itself was a mix of SC Pro ST quad and SS ladder systems with custom support sections and our ultra-durable heavyweight vinyl for the top and side panels. We supplied our custom small footprint screw jacks with angle adjustable ground plates to allow the stage platforms and the roof uprights to be levelled correctly and safely on the slope, with outrigger supports for the roof to help with stability.
We also supplied twelve of our heavy-duty 2m x 1m stage platforms, along with height adjustable stage stairs and safety rails to allow for safe entry and exit of the stage area.
The 5m x 5m roof structure offers a nice compact stage with plenty of room for a full live band and PA system without feeling crowded, and its lightweight modular design makes construction, storage, and transport nice and simple.

The End Result
The 24th annual Michaelmas Fair took place on September 21st 2019, with a crowd estimated to be around 4000 visiting the area to enjoy the wide selection of entertainment provided.
The day saw vintage car and steam engine parades, street magicians, the famous lantern parade, and live music all afternoon and into the evening, with the new stage system as the focal point. The organiser Keith Whiddon was thrilled with the quality of the system, and with the experience of buying from us as we strived to give him everything he had envisioned while remaining within a strict budget.
The stage and roof system will become part of this wonderful annual event for years to come.
