The traditional definition of a riser is a tiered structure (usually 3 or 4 stepped rows) that's often used for choir performances or for musicians in chairs. This is still the case, but the name has also absorbed and intertwined with stage risers, which is the name for lightweight portable staging. Stage risers use an umbrella-type folding leg mechanism for easy transport.

As above, a stage riser platform is the name given to a lightweight stage deck system which features a folding riser leg unit. These 1m x 1m footprint risers fold in a concertina-style to a convenient size that's easy to carry and store. The detachable stage surface, or platform, is quickly attached to the riser to form a solid structure.

These riser stage platforms feature simple deck-to-deck connections allowing for the fast construction of large praised performance areas, or a more traditional choir riser by using riser leg units of increasing heights to create tiers.

Designed for the ease of transport in a standard car, cupboard storage, and simple construction by a single person, stage risers use a standard platform size of 1m x 1m. The thickness of the platform will vary but is usually between 30mm to 80mm depending on brand.

2m x 1m platforms were available for a time, though newer lightweight riser systems have favoured just the 1m x 1m format for its obvious size and handling advantages.

When describing stage decks you will find a lot of terms and phrases are used due to their multiple applications. To be technically correct though, a stage is a dedicated entertainment space in a building, so not necessarily raised, though most are. A platform on the other hand is a singular term for a raised plinth or surface.

When it comes to portable stage for sale, you will mostly find the words stage and platform are interchangeable, and it will be made clear to you whether you are looking at a single stage deck or a complete modular stage set.
